Hockey was played in Myanmar even before
Myanmar gained its' independence. However,
it was not played by the locals but by the
Indian soldiers of the British Army during
the British colonization. Only after some
time; Gurkha, Chin and some Burmese natives
started picking up on the sport.
The Myanmar Hockey Federation (MHF) was
first formed in 1951. The native who have
had experience playing Hockey took the time
to teach others who were interested and keen
on playing the sport. In doing so, they
arranged tutorials and exhibited simulation
matches.
